Viva Cultura

In my junior year of college, Fall 2024, the first ever “Viva Culutra” was performed. I created the concept near the end of my sophomore year and was so happy we were able to pull it off. Since its inaugural performance, “Viva Cultura” has become a yearly tradition to send off Hispanic Heritage Month at Texas State.

Early on in the process of developing the first “Viva Cultura,” I was asked “What’s the theme for this showcase?” The only answer I had was “Celebration.” Our first year celebrated the voices and stories of the Latino community. From Selena to “In the Heights” to “Coco” we highlighted some of the most well known pieces in our community!

Celebration

For the second year, I didn’t know exactly where to take this one. I wanted to make a showcase that I’d be satisfied with since this was going to be my last “Viva Cultura” that I’d be directing. The word journey stuck with me and it just made sense. Our second showcase told a story of the Latino journey. From starting off as yearners, leaving what we know behind in search for a better life, to being here and going through the hardships the world throws at us, to never letting our stories die and having it be passed on through generations after generations. I was so proud of the outcome and so happy to see our little family grow in the span of a year.
